Photo Tips Podcast: Prevent Focus Point Shifts #156

This episode is for Jan on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, who reached out with a pretty frustrating issue he was having with his Sony camera. He noticed that no matter what, his camera would randomly change the focus point that he'd set. So I invited Jan to join me for a Photo Safari to see exactly what was going on. I had a pretty good idea of what the problem was, but I wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

When we met up, he showed me how he was setting his focus point. He'd use the touchscreen to navigate to where he wanted the focus to be. Once it was set, he'd lift the camera to his face and start shooting. Here's the issue. When he put the camera to his face, his nose would accidentally touch the screen before the sensor could turn off the LCD. Yes, that sensor I talked about in the last episode. This little bump was enough to shift the focus point, changing what he had just set. Funny enough, the first touchscreen camera I had would do the same thing, shifting my focus point just like Jan's.

So a quick tip for everyone with a touchscreen? Be careful when you're setting anything on your LCD. The touchscreen is super sensitive, which is great, but it also means it's easy to accidentally change settings with the tap of your nose. Make sure you press SET or OK to lock in your settings before you bring the camera to your face. That will prevent those accidental changes.
